The incumbent is responsible for planning and implementing an education and technica! l assistance program around various preconception health messages in support of the Delaware Healthy Mother & Infant Consortium (DHMIC) Education and Prevention subcommittee under the direction of the March of Dimes Delaware Chapter and with the support of the Delaware Healthy Mother and Infant Consortium and the Delaware Perinatal Cooperative.

The incumbent will receive direction and content guidance from the Chair of the DHMIC’s Education and Prevention subcommittee. The State Director of the Delaware Chapter of the March of Dimes will provide day-to-day oversight. The incumbent will be an employee of the March of Dimes Delaware Chapter for as long as the contract is in place. This is a 10.5 hour a week contract funded position.

Position Responsibilities

The Preconception Nurse Educator will work collaboratively with various stakeholders including the Division of Public Health, the DHMIC’s Education and Prevention subcommittee, Health Care P! roviders, and additional members of the DHMIC, to implement ke! y strategic priorities of the Education and Prevention subcommittee along with other subcommittees of the DHMIC. These initiatives are targeted to change health care service/provider practices and consumer knowledge around preconception care in ways that improve birth outcomes and enhance the health and well-being of women across the state.

These activities will involve extensive provider/staff education, consumer education, consultation, technical assistance, problem solving, and consensus building. The Preconception Nurse Educator must have demonstrated a proven record of accomplishment as a “change agent” - someone who is able to work with others to bring about meaningful and sustained improvements. Essential Functions:

  • Provides expert nursing consultation in the areas of obstetrics/gynecology, maternal health, and fetal/infant health.
  • Analyzes provider techniques/! health service delivery and recommends modifications based on knowledge of best practices.
  • Develops and carries out education programs. Prepares educational materials and assists in planning and developing health and educational programs for health care providers and consumers.
  • Conducts workshops, conferences, and seminars in Obstetrics, Pediatrics and Family Medicine; required to speak before special interest groups, community organizations, medical and health care groups, or the general public.
  • Prepares a variety of records, reports, and summaries in support of program planning, organization, implementation, and evaluation.
  • Serves on the Education and Prevention subcommittee of the Delaware Healthy Mother and Infant Consortium.
Qualifications Required

  • Bachelor’s Degree of Science in Nursing (BSN) required, Masters in Nursing preferred
  • Knowledge of nursing principles, practices, and theory to inclu! de needs assessment, measurement, and evaluation techniques.
  • K! nowledge of planning, developing, and monitoring a professional health care program with emphasis on implementing standards of care, quality assurance and program analysis.
  • Knowledge of the principles of obstetrics/gynecology, maternal health and fetal-infant health, and pediatrics.
  • Possession of a Delaware Registered Nurse license OR multi-state compact license
  • Ability to function in a fast paced environment and deal with multiple priorities
  • Ability to work as part of a team, as this position will both be a part of the DHMIC Education and Prevention subcommittee as well as work closely with the Perinatal Nurse Educator
  • Strong interpersonal, verbal and written communications skills, problem solving, planning, implementation, computer, and organizational skills
  • Must be able to maintain a flexible work schedule, which may include evenings/weekends
  • Must be able to drive to meetings, training, etc. using own transpo! rtation
  • Must successfully complete a credit and criminal background check including Delaware State Police Fingerprinting
  • Skill in working effectively with a variety of professional health care providers & community partners to include providing consultative services in maternal/fetal health.
  • Skill in writing clear, complete, and concise records, reports, and summaries to include program manuals and guides.
  • Skill in the preparation of a variety of educational materials in maternal/fetal health.
  • Ability to conduct workshops, conferences, and seminars in maternal/fetal health as well as make presentations before health care providers, special interest, community groups and general public.
  • Ability to identify health care problems in maternal/fetal health and work as a team to develop/implement appropriate intervention or corrective programs.
