Nemours is seeking a Per Diem Speech Pathologist to join our Therapeutic & Rehab Services team in Delaware.

To keep pace with the changing health care environment and build a healthier future for our children, Nemours has embarked on a multi-phase expansion to create a children’s hospital like no other in the region. Upon completion in June 2014, the hospital will include private, family-centered, technologically advanced patient rooms, a new Pediatric Intensive Care Unit and a new expanded Emergency Department.

Provides Speech-Language Pathology evaluation, treatment and consultation independently to typical patients within a program under the prescription of a physician and within the guidelines designated by departmental and hospital policies and procedures. Expands knowledge of less-common populations seen within the program through mentorship and educational opportunities.

A. Direct Patient Care Responsibilities

Demonstrates proficiency in the care of pediatrics, adolescents and adults; completes at least 75% of basic Speech-Language clinical competencies.

Demonstrates proficiency in the care of neonates as required by assignment.

Evaluates patients for speech-language pathology treatment, including equipment, home programs, etc. Independently provides and coordinates age-appropriate speech-language pathology consultation, treatment plans and treatment in routine patient care situations.

Completes timely documentation as required by departmental policy, The Joint Commission and CARF standards. Attends meetings related to patient treatment and contributes to discussions as interdisciplinary team member.

Consults with other services, families and outside agencies to recommend equipment, home or school modifications, transition of care, etc.

Maintains knowledge of the insurance referral/authorization process.

B. Indirect Patient Care Responsibilities

Staff development: assesses existing and develops new activities that promote general knowledge and professionalism within the department. Participates in peer review process. Attends inservices/continuing education. Provides updates in the form of inservices to associates.

CQI: participates in program, discipline, specialty and hospital-wide CQI projects.

Assessment and Treatment: contributes to discipline and program committees to enhance patient care; assists in assessing current procedures; and assists in developing methods of improvement related to patient care.

Program Development: participates in activities to increase program use, awareness and marketing. Attends monthly program meetings. Contributes to achievement of department/program goals.

Clinical Education: Assists in mentoring affiliating speech-language pathology students, new speech-language pathology staff, support personnel and volunteers. Adequately and appropriately supervises CFY staff. Participates in student and volunteer program organization.

Team Work: participates in single discipline, multi-disciplinary and specialty teams.

Professional Development: developing ties with professional organizations. Provides educational inservices and experiences to the discipline/program and outside community. Attends speech-language pathology meetings as scheduled in the hospital. May participate in promotional activities for speech-language pathology and/or hospital.

Weekend Rehab Rotation: checks crash cart per hospital policy.

Per Diem Position.

Education, Area of Study, Training and Experience:
Master’s degree in Speech-Language Pathology or its equivalent from an ASHA-accredited university.

Familiarity with speech and language development, deviation and disorders.

Familiarity with assessment scales and instruments, techniques of assessment and intervention with pediatric populations.

Clinical internship in pediatrics preferred

Experience with physically and/or mentally challenged populations preferred.

Strong written and verbal communication skills.

Licenses, Registrations, or Certifications:
Hold Delaware State License (permanent or temporary) to practice Speech-Language Pathology within 2 weeks of date of hire.

Hold ASHA Certificate of Clinical Competence in Speech-Language Pathology (CCC-SLP), or in process of completing Clinical Fellowship Year with goal of completing CCC-SLP within 10-12 months.

CPR certification (Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation) within 6 months of date of hire.

Member of professional specialty organizations (ASHA, Delaware Speech and Hearing Association) preferred.
