To keep pace with the changing health care environment and build a healthier future for our children, Nemours has embarked on a multi-phase expansi! on to create a children's hospital like no other in the region! . Upon completion in June 2014, the hospital will include private patient rooms, a new Pediatric Intensive Care Unit and a new expanded Emergency Department.

Provides child life assessment, intervention and coordination with medical/clinical staff and outside agencies as appropriate within the guidelines designated by the department and the Delaware Valley policies and procedures. Actively participates in departmental education activities in order to expand knowledge of patient populations and evidence-based practice.

Direct Patient Care Responsibilities

Demonstrates proficiency in the care of all ages: pediatrics, adolescents and adults. Completes at least 75% of Staff I Child Life competencies.

Assesses patient's need for therapeutic, developmental and social/recreational play and provide as appropriate.

Provides family/child education regarding diagnosis, treatment and the impact of hospitalization to increase understan! ding and minimize trauma and disruption in normal growth and development. Uses developmentally appropriate and medically accurate information to prepare children and families for diagnostic and treatment procedures, as defined in the Child Life preparation protocol. Psychological preparation will be provided in such a way that knowledge is increased and emotional needs are supported.

Utilizes stress reduction techniques to facilitate coping throughout hospital experience and in the home setting.

Provides medical play to allow children to explore, express, cope and gain a sense of mastery and control over hospitalization and related fears, fantasies and concerns.

Extends support to family members with respect to their needs, cultural values and beliefs.

Completes timely documentation as required by department policy, The Joint Commission and CARF standards.

Attends meetings related to patient treatment and contributes to discussio! n as an interdisciplinary team member.

Attends inservices/cont! inuing education; provides updates in the form of inservices to associates.

May provide services within the home setting, when appropriate.

Indirect Patient Care Responsibilities

Assesses existing and develops new activities that promote general knowledge and professionalism within the department; mentors Staff I team members; participates in peer review process; assists in the annual review of clinical competencies; attends in-services/continuing education; and provides updates in the form of in-services to the department.

Participates in program, discipline, specialty and hospital-wide Continuous Improvement projects.

Contributes to discipline and program committees to enhance patient care. Assesses current procedures and assists in developing methods of improvement related to patient care, including treatment plans of care.

Participates in activities to increase program use, awareness and marketability. Participates i! n meeting goals of the department. Attends monthly program meetings.

Assists in mentoring affiliating child life students, new child life staff, support personnel and volunteers. Assists with hospital-wide student teaching. Participates in student and volunteer program organization.

Participates in and begins to lead single discipline, multi-disciplinary and specialty teams. Mentor Staff I in teamwork principles.

Contributes to the growth and development of specialty areas within the child life specialty; develops ties with professional organizations; provides educational in-services and experiences to the department/program/community beyond mandated staff in-services from continuing education courses; and participates in promotional activities for Child Life and/or Nemours.

Part-time position: 3 days/week (day shift) to cover general inpatient pediatrics.

Requirements

Bachelor's degree.

Must meet require! ments to obtain Certification as a Child Life Specialist within 6 month! s of hire.
