To keep pace with the changing health care environment and build a healthier future for our children, Nemours has embarked on a multi-phase expansion to create a children's hospital like no other in the region. Upon completion in June 2014, the hospital will include private, family-centered, technologically advanced patient rooms, a new Pediatric Intensive Care Unit, and a new expanded Emergency Department.
This position is responsible for the design, development, maintenance, and support of web-based and mobile applications, which support the operations of the Nemours Bioinformatics Core Facility. This position will work at several phases of the software development life-cycle and will be personally responsible for front-end application appearance and functionality: requirements gathering/specification, designing interfaces, writing code, compliance testing, documentation, maintenance, and some user support. The successful candidate must demonstrate an understanding of research and technical requirements for each assigned project.
This position will make recommendations about Web and mobile technologies and general applications programming within the bioinformatics core. The individual in this position must work well with other members of the bioinformatics core.
Responsibilities:
1. Design, develop, test, document, and maintain web-based applications (pages and forms) using XHTML 1.0, CSS 2.0, JavaScript, XSL, PHP 5.0, JSP, MySQL, Photoshop, and Dreamweaver. Special emphasis will be given to applications that operate robustly on mobile platforms such as iPad and other iOS-based devices.
2. Ensure usability and accessibility across all projects - Coding to w3c standards compliance on all
new projects and moving everything in this direction when working on existing models. Section 508 accessibility compliance wherever possible. Graceful degradation of JavaScript. Provide equal compatibility, look, and feel across several platforms including IE7+ (PC), Chrome (PC & Mac), FireFox (PC & Mac), Safari (Mac) as well as mobile versions of these and other browsers.
3. Provide support to Bioinformatics staff. Provide XHTML & CSS services, support, and instruction to other members of the core. Write, design, and produce instructional material for use by end-users.
4. Tests, troubleshoots, and analyzes complex system problems and determines solution. Must be willing to work during non-business hours when needed to maintain live sites.
5. Requirements Documentation & Project conception - Create documentation from initial job request through completion.
6. Assess and make recommendations regarding tools, languages, methodologies, and processes pertaining to the work of the Bioinformatics Core.
7. Keep up to date with a wide range of communications technologies (particularly those related to web-based applications), and operationalize those new technologies as they provide benefit to the work of the Core.
Additional Responsibilities:
1. Interact with all members of the Core staff to develop and maintain continuity of projects.
2. Utilize project management skills to ensure accuracy and timeliness of work.
3. Respond to operational and user problems.
4. Provide user training as necessary.
5. Other duties as assigned.
A Bachelor's degree is required, as well as at least 1 year of relevant experience.
1. Expertise in HTML/XHTML (W3C), CSS (W3C), Photoshop, Dreamweaver, SQL.
2. Expertise with JavaScript, XSL, PHP, JSP, DOM as well as scripting languages such as perl, bash, Python.
3. Proficiency with application software testing (unit, integration, and application-level). Familiarity with QA Test Plans and QA Methodologies.
4. Proficiency with at least one of the following programming languages: C, C++, Objective C.
5. Excellent interpersonal/communications skills with the ability to interact effectively with Core staff and members of other departments. Ability to work in a fast paced / dynamic team environment and possess time management skills to meet schedules.
