Salary range: $82,500 - $116,250

The Unicorn We're Looking For:
We are looking for a new Unicorn to join our People Operations team to focus on the organization's compensation and benefits programs. This Unicorn is:

  • Passionate about compensation and benefits programs and understands the importance of these programs in the lives of employees and their families.
  • Organized in their approach to work and able to manage multiple tasks and projects simultaneously.
  • Attentive to details and will maintain complete, accurate, and secure records.
  • Eager to analyze data in order to make informed decisions and recommendations around compensation and benefits strategies.
  • Effective in their communication with various audiences who have different levels of understanding on how compensation and benefits programs operate (i.e. employees, company leadership, brokers, carriers, and vendors).
  • Compassionate in their support and guidance to employees navigating enrollments, claims processes, and various issues and questions.
  • Ethical and places value on compliance with relevant regulations and confidentiality of employee information.

This will be the first role of its kind for the company and will be an integral part of the existing People Operations team.

Our unicorn talent is one of our company's unique differentiators and People Operations is closely integrated with the business. The compensation and benefits programs are two of the key components in attracting and retaining talented unicorns. Our existing People Ops team currently consists of professionals focused on talent acquisition and people operations generalist/business partner disciplines but we're very excited to bring in someone specialized in compensation and benefits.

We focus on outcomes and desired objectives rather than executing based on "the way it has always been done".

Responsibilities of this Role:

  • Work with company leadership on the design and implementation of a comprehensive total rewards strategy. This will include compensation and benefits programs that align company values, desired outcomes, and legal and regulatory compliance obligations.
  • Analyze trends in the market and industry to ensure our total rewards offerings are attractive and competitive in the talent market.
  • Solicit and analyze feedback from employees on their experience with our benefits and compensation programs to inform future enhancements and recommendations to our total rewards strategy.
  • Provide reports, data, and recommendations to the company's leadership team about the organization's rewards programs.
  • Manage the day-to-day administration of Defense Unicorns' employee benefits offerings, including: medical, dental, vision, 401K, life and disability insurance, parental leave, and other additional benefits programs.
  • Manage the benefits renewal and the open enrollment process.
  • Educate employees and prospective employees on the company's benefit programs so that they understand eligibility, coverage, and the value of the program.

This will include:

  • Benefits orientations/materials for new employees.
  • Translation of benefits terminology and jargon into accessible language for employees to support understanding and utilization.
  • Addressing individual questions and concerns.
  • Collaboration with the Unicorn Collecting (Talent Acquisition) team to provide an accurate overview of benefits offerings to prospective candidates to support the hiring process.
  • Provide ongoing communication, guidance, and support to employees with respect to benefits.
  • Partner with Finance and Operations to develop and manage the budget for compensation and benefits.
  • Verify the accuracy of employee benefit deductions in the payroll system for the payroll process.
  • Support the quarterly compensation planning and review cycles.
  • Liaise with brokers, carriers, and vendors to ensure accurate and timely enrollments and changes to enrollments, negotiate rates and services for new and renewed benefits contracts, and to resolve questions and concerns.
  • Maintain accurate records of employee benefits, including elections and benefit plan documentation, and ensure that data is kept secure and confidential.
  • Ensure compliance with applicable federal, state, and local employment and benefits laws and regulations, such as the Affordable Care Act (ACA), Employee Retirement Income Security Act (ERISA), and HIPPA. Prepare and file required reports and disclosures, such as Form 5500 and Summary Plan Descriptions.

Preferred Qualifications:
The following experienced and knowledge would be helpful but is not required:

  • Benefits administration experience.
  • Knowledge of benefits contract language.
  • Knowledge of pertinent federal and state regulations, filing and compliance requirements affecting employee benefits programs (including ACA, ERISA, COBRA, FMLA, ADA, Section 125, Medicare, and DOL requirements).
  • Strong analytical skills and experience with using data to inform and drive good decision-making.
  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills.
  • Attentive to detail and able to manage multiple tasks and projects.
  • Experience working with remote or distributed teams.

Travel Expectations:

  • 5%-10% - This is a remote US based position. Travel would consist of company retreats and team building events/conference attendance.
