Nemours is seeking a Genetic Counselor for a shared position within the Division of Medical Genetics and the Swank Autism Center.
The genetic counselor provides direct patient care services regarding expertise in clinical genetic counseling and communication with patients in accordance with professional ethics and values. In the Division of Medical Genetics, this individual will work closely with a team of medical geneticists, genetic counselors, and genetic counseling assistant(s). Also included in this role is an exciting opportunity to develop genetic counseling services within the Swank Autism Center, a new expansion of the hospital's services for children with autism spectrum disorder and their families. This multidisciplinary team with include developmental pediatricians, psychiatrists, psychologists, and other providers integral to the comprehensive, family-centered care of children with autism.
Genetic counseling services include obtaining and interpreting pertinent personal and family history, participating in the clinical diagnostic process, acting as a patient and family liaison, and serving as an educator and resource for patients and their families, in-house staff, other health care professionals, and the public. Additionally, the genetic counselor coordinates appropriate genetic testing, discusses and obtains informed consent for genetic testing, interprets and reports test results, and provides access to follow-up referrals, resources and support as appropriate.
The genetic counselor may also participate in the development and execution of clinical research studies, manuscript/abstract preparation and scientific presentations.
1. Responsible for providing current and accurate information available regarding genetic testing, informed consent, results interpretation, and recommendations.
2. In the Division of Medical Genetics, participates fully in the clinical genetics evaluation and documentation of physical exam under the supervision of the clinical geneticist in outpatient and inpatient settings.
3. In the Swank Autism Center, provides genetic counseling services to families seeking services related to autism spectrum disordersand co-morbid medical and genetic disorders.
4. Provides clinical care to patients especially with regard to obtaining complete histories, reviewing past medical records, preparing cases, family history assessment, and coordination of diagnostic testing and follow up for individuals referred for genetic indications.
5. Provides appropriate risk assessment, genetic counseling, and resource identification based on family history and genetic testing/evaluation.
6. Coordinates necessary evaluations, diagnostic tests, and referrals to other specialists.
7. Follows up with patients as necessary regarding the disclosure and clear explanation of test results, recommendations, and psychosocial support in person, by phone, or via electronic communication.
8. Communicates with appropriate medical staff for purposes of consultation, referral, and coordination of patient care.
9. Assures complete and accurate documentation related to genetic information and genetic counseling in the medical record.
10. Maintains up-to- date knowledge regarding clinical genetics by attending educational and scientific conferences and participating in continuing education regularly.
Requirements :
Compilation and assessment of comprehensive and accurate patient medical histories, family histories, and relevant psychosocial issues.
Well-developed clinical research skills for case review and research.
Clinically appropriate counseling and psychosocial intervention skills.
Advanced knowledge of clinical genetic diagnostics and applications.
Efficient case management and medical documentation skills.
Masterâs degree from an Accreditation Council for Genetic Counseling-accredited program and be either board certified or have active candidate status at the time of hire (i.e. working on passing board exam). Minimum 1 - 3 years job related experience.
